Pleasure is an energy and way of being that is linked to life force, it’s about experiencing the current within you and allowing that current to flow independently from what’s happening outside you.  It invites the question – how we can increase pleasure and our stamina for it without being dependent or reliant on how things are outside of us.

It’s also important to note that pleasure means different things to different people, so it’s important to detach yourself from societies depiction of what pleasure should look or feel like and be curious to experiencing it on your own terms.  For some women it can be aliveness, vitality and sparkle and for others it may be the absence of pain for a little while. It’s about feeling and experiencing it in your own body and understanding that whatever you meet there is neither right or wrong, it just simply is.

If pleasure is a current within our bodies, it makes sense that in order to access it we must turn our awareness inwards and meet it.  A useful exercise to do is to take what I call a pleasure body scan, and so I invite you, if it’s safe to do so, to close down your eyes and take this scan with me.

Closing down your eyes, I invite you place both hands somewhere on your body, somewhere that feels safe, nourishing, connecting, and just becoming aware of the texture, temperature and touch of your hands as they rest here.

I now invite you to notice your breath.  There’s no need to change it, simply noticing it flowing in and out of your body with the rise and fall of your chest.

And as you begin to turn your awareness inwards, just rest down into the furniture and support beneath you, allowing yourself to sink deeper down into the furniture, floors, ground and mother earth beneath you.

I now invite you to begin to scan your body, looking for pockets of pleasure or aliveness within.  You may start from your toes and work up, or from your head and work down.  You may radiate this scan from your heart outwards or your hips outwards, just wherever feels like a good place to start for you.

Feeling, sensing and being curious about where this current of pleasure might lie.  It might be in your legs, your eyes, your neck and shoulders, your pelvis, feet, toes or elbow!  You may experience it as a tiny stream or a gushing river.  Remember there is no right or wrong way to feel and no right or wrong place to find it.

Once you have a sense for where your pleasure resides, I invite you to draw your breath into this place and see if you can expand this sensation of pleasure and welcome it to take up more space in your body.  You might feel it expanding from the epicentre, or it might move to other places in your body.  Simply let it expand, move, flow and be, welcoming it, and becoming more intimate with the sensations in your body.  Ask yourself, is there room for pleasure to take up more space in my body and keep breathing into that.

Then when you are ready, I invite you to slow down your breath and gently bring your awareness back into the space around you.  Opening your eyes and letting me know what you discovered.

I’m going to get started by dispelling a misconception that many women have around pleasure, and it’s the belief that pleasure can only be experienced when we have banished pain!  I often see in my coaching clients this need to reach an epiphany or transformative place before they can access pleasure.  Releasing frozen tension can help access pleasure but the truth is that there’s always a current of pleasure alive within our bodies that can be sourced and amplified with the correct safety, support and devotion.
