Mother Wound – Healing & Reconnecting with Your Cherishing Mother

If there’s a voice in your head constantly telling you, “you’re bad, they’re bad, the world is bad,” it may not truly be your voice.

This is often part of the Mother Wound – an internalised pattern shaped by early relationships and wider cultural conditioning.

What Is the Mother Wound?

The Mother Wound refers to the emotional pain, beliefs, and behavioural patterns we inherit through maternal relationships.

One way to understand this is through what Sarah Durham calls the “Patriarchal Death Mother.”

This concept, rooted in feminist theory, explains how maternal energy – naturally nurturing and loving – can become distorted into something controlling, critical and emotionally dismissive.

Sometimes this energy comes from our Mothers or Grandmothers. Other times, we experience it through other women or societal expectations.

Over time, we internalise this voice and it begins to shape how we see ourselves and the world.

Signs of the Mother Wound

The Mother Wound often shows up as an inner voice that is harsh and punishing, focused on what’s “wrong” with you; intolerant of messy or complex emotions; and rooted in shame and self-criticism.

Instead of supporting your growth and self-expression, this voice suppresses it and leaves you feeling fearful and insecure.

The Inner Critic vs. The Cherishing Mother

While the Mother Wound creates a critical inner voice, there is another voice within you, known as the Cherishing Mother.

This voice protects the wild feminine in you and the world. Notices what’s right about you and everything around you and already knows you’ll make it through because she can see you on the other side.

The voice of your inner Cherishing Mother is slow, present, adventurous, playful, primal, grounded, and deeply connected to love.

It’s the voice that gently guides you toward hope, courage, possibility, and change. It’s the voice that says,

“You are perfect as you are. You matter. Your gifts matter. And your one precious life is here to be lived.”

Why the Mother Wound Feels Strong Right Now

We live in a time of intense global challenges—violence, injustice, and uncertainty.

When these realities meet your brain’s natural negativity bias, the Mother Wound can feel overwhelming.

But healing doesn’t mean ignoring reality. It means choosing not to let that critical voice diminish your hope, silence your courage and convince you that you don’t matter.

Because you do.

How to Heal the Mother Wound
