Invisibility in Midlife: How to Turn It Into Your Power

I waited ten minutes at a bar recently. I watched everyone around me get served, and somewhere in that wait I realised the phrase "invisible women" absolutely applied to me.

I'm not going to lie: it hurt, and it enraged me, and if you've walked into a room and sensed you've somehow disappeared, you know this feeling.

Invisibility in midlife is one of the most disorientating experiences a woman can face. It's also one of the most powerful doorways into a new chapter of life.

Why Invisibility in Midlife Hurts So Much

Being overlooked is more than a social slight. It lands as a betrayal, a kind of abandonment.

You're no longer in the club. People no longer see you, hear you or take you seriously. You can feel irrelevant, or even an annoyance, in a society that prizes youth, naivety and smaller bodies that are easier to control.

That kind of message cuts deep, especially when you've spent decades giving, working, caring and contributing.

But, underneath the hurt sits something even more unsettling: the stark realisation that no one is coming to save you.

The Fairy Tale That Falls Apart

Think about the fairy tales we grew up with. The knight in shining armour. That prince's kiss.

The message was clear: the system, the patriarchy, will look after you if you're young, attractive, agreeable and you follow the rules.

(Also, have you noticed who the older women are in those stories? Witches, villains who are unhinged, untrustworthy and out to destroy the young maiden.)

Midlife reveals that this was always a fairy tale.

The trust you placed in a system you believed respected and valued you shatters. You start to see how much of your power, wellbeing and sense of worth you handed to someone else, or to society, to measure and validate.

That realisation unsettles you, disorientates you and can make you feel furious or ashamed.

But here's what I want you to hear: THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT.

When betrayal wakes us up, it invites us to break open, to evolve, and take radical responsibility for ourselves and how we want to move forward.

You can stay small, wounded and in victim mode because someone else decided you're irrelevant.

Or you can use your new-found invisibility to become ungovernable.

Consider how much easier it is to subvert convention when no one is watching, or when no one believes you have the power to do it.

You can do what you actually want and need to do, not only for yourself, but for the betterment of the wider world.

Let Yourself Feel It

I'm not suggesting you skip the anger. Please scream. Rage. Cry.

This realisation brings up all of those emotions, and we need to let them in, listen to them and tend to them so they can move through the body.

If we don't, they harden into bitterness and victimhood.

We also have to learn to hold our vulnerability, because it exposes our core wounds: not good enough, unworthy, unlovable, ugly.

When we meet those wounds, we begin to heal them. And as we heal them, we open into the next evolution of ourselves.

This inner work matters because it lets us move through the conditioning and see the gifts that invisibility holds.

The Hidden Gifts of Invisibility in Midlife

Yes, there are gifts here, and in midlife you get to hold them in both hands.

You get to play outside the rules. Those are the rules that say, "I'll give you what you want, as long as you play my game." When you step outside them, you find agency. You discover a sense of sovereignty that lets you write your own rules, boundaries and conditions.

Learn to trust yourself. You realise there's no safety net against life's uncertainty. In that space, you learn to move forward from deep trust, not in someone else, but in yourself, your soul and the divine presence within you.

The "good girl" gives way to the goddess. The goddess expresses who you truly are, not who everyone expects you to be.

By midlife, many of us have spent decades following a script. We tried to control outcomes; watched the world take our power; did all the things we thought we should, and then arrived at a place where it felt like we were watching our lives from the outside.

So here's an invitation: come back inside. Create your own rules and become ungovernable in your invisibility.

How Somatic Work Supports You Through

Invisibility in Midlife

Insight alone only takes you so far. Somatic work and embodiment help you move through invisibility in midlife in two key ways.

1. Metabolise Your Rage, Grief and Shame

Your head can understand these emotions, but your body stores them.

Somatic coaching helps you connect with their sensations. Where does the rage live? Is it heat in your chest or a clench in your jaw? Does grief show up as heaviness in your throat or belly?

When you take time to locate these emotions, and learn to talk to them and tend to them, you can, over time, understand them and the wisdom they hold.

These emotions aren't wrong. They're simply asking for a little time to be expressed and understood.

2. Embody the Energy You Want to Feel More Of

Embodiment also helps you connect with the energy you want to cultivate more of.

That energy already lives in you. It may simply have lain dormant for a while.

If that feels true for you, you're invited to try this short practice with sovereignty:

Take a breath. If it feels safe, close your eyes or soften your gaze. Let your feet feel the floor. Let your spine lengthen.

Now, notice what sovereignty feels like in your body. What are its flavours and sensations? How would it have you hold yourself? Can you use your breath to expand it, and become more intimate with it, as if you were slipping on a piece of clothing and noticing how it feels.

Pause here for a few moments, then notice what shifted.

Maybe your shoulders dropped, your chest opened or you sat taller.

Perhaps you felt fear or contraction.

Whatever you noticed is welcome, because it offers a thread you can explore more deeply with the right kind of support.

That is the difference between understanding sovereignty intellectually and feeling it in your body. The felt sense helps you integrate these shifts. It reminds you that this energy is innate, and that you can cultivate, expand and express it in ways that are unique and right for you.
