Women’s Rage and Grief

Women's Rage and Grief

I can’t think of many other emotions that are suppressed quite as tightly women’s rage and grief. Twin flames of the same fire; both taboo and often misunderstood.

Today, I want to dive into the complex and intertwined dynamic between rage and grief.  To question the patriarchal, capitalist scripts that taught us how to ‘deal’ with them, and explore another way.

Rage and grief are natural and valid emotions. They both serve as messengers indicating that something within you needs acknowledging and tending to.

They can also be powerful catalysts in your healing journey if you allow them space to be felt and understood.

However, your default response to them is often to shame and shut them down.

Interplay Between Rage and Grief

Rage – often seen as an intimidating force – is in fact a powerful energy that calls for your attention. It can be stirred up by societal pressures, unresolved traumas, loss, injustice and fluctuating hormones of midlife!

Often, underneath your rage is grief. A deep sense of loss and longing for what no longer is. However, this grief gets missed in the rush to suppress rage (and all its wisdom).

Grief on the other hand, is seen as a softer more tender emotion. Something that you’ve been taught to process quietly and quickly in the privacy. However, it’s also well documented that the grieving process includes rage!

This then leads you to label your grief as wrong because surely you ‘should’ be feeling sad not mad.

So, what do you do?!

Curiosity and Compassion

How would it feel to stop suppressing and shaming your rage and grief and instead offer them curiosity and compassion? To feel, explore and express (in a safe way) the underlying causes of these big emotions.

To give yourself FULL permission to rage and mourn, to process the pain, and gently release what no longer serves you. In whatever time frame you need.
