I started my journey as a beekeeper this year, and I'm learning just how much these small creatures have to share - if we're willing to listen. In fact, some of the most powerful lessons for midlife women haven't come from books or podcasts this year. They've come from a wooden box in my garden, humming with 60,000 tiny teachers.
Every time I lift the lid, I hear it: a hum. Not just sound, but something ancient — a low, steady note of capability, surety, intuition and wisdom. It stops me in my tracks, every single time.
Busy Without Rushing
The hive stays busy, yet it never rushes. At its height, the colony holds around 60,000 bees, and not one of them competes. Instead, each bee grows into her role exactly when she's ready, with no proving and no striving. She simply unfolds quietly, trusting her own timing, wisdom and experience. These are definitely lessons for midlife that resonate!
Great Teachers of Boundaries
Bees also teach boundaries brilliantly. They're not cruel, but if you rush them or push them somewhere they don't want to go, they'll remind you - clearly and unapologetically - who knows best. Their sting isn't aggression; it's protection. And that distinction matters, especially for women who've spent decades mistaking their boundaries as something to apologise for.
Moving on Instinct, Not Proof
Remarkably, almost everything bees create happens in the dark, without sight to guide them. Instead, they rely on instinct, scent, touch and an unshakeable trust that they already carry what they need to thrive. They don't wait for proof before they act. Instead, they move with faith in their own nature.
In Rhythm With the Earth
What's more, bees move with Mother Earth, never against her. During her seasons of abundance, they build, roam and reach outward. Then, as her seasons of rest arrive, the bees draw inward, clustering close, warming one another and guarding their Queen until the warmth returns.
Why These Are Lessons in Midlife
As midlife women, many of us reach a point where we realise the world has been pulling us the wrong way. We've been taught to distrust our instincts, to live in competition and scarcity, to push ourselves beyond our capacity, and to question our own boundaries.
The bees, however, offer another way. It isn't something new to invent, but something ancient to remember - a more truthful way of living that we can embody and one we must sometimes use our sting to protect.
A Question to Sit With
So, I'll leave you with this to ponder: if the bees could share lessons for midlife with you right now, which would it be?
To trust your instincts
Hold your boundaries
Move with your own natural rhythm instead of against
Or simply to remember your own quiet power
Which one meets you exactly where you are today?
