Midlife Anxiety. What’s Really Going On?

Do you feel like you’re stuck in mental loops of analysis paralysis. Consumed by a sense of midlife anxiety that makes you question everything you say and do?

This feeling is common amongst women. But when you begin to unravel it, it becomes apparent that it’s an accumulation of emotional experiences that have been ignored, belittled or gaslit. To the point where you completely disconnect from what you know to be true.

Understanding midlife anxiety.

If you look underneath anxiety, you find confusion, lack of clarity and an inability to trust (yourself and others.)

Firstly, I want you to know that these doubts have been placed purposely in your body by the patriarchy. Because it knows how powerful you are and in that knowledge is fear.

So, patriarchal structures and beliefs devise ways to subdue your power. Ways that look like:

  1. Disconnecting you from the intuitive knowing on the inside, and persuade you to focus on the outside – the should’s, ought to’s, have to’s.
  2. Telling you, you can have it all but also making sure you to do it all. Until you’re so dried up and exhausted you don’t know who you are.
  3. Keeping you in the pretty, pleasing energy of maiden by placing ‘social value’ on youth. In turn, devaluing all the wisdom and experience you’ve gained over your years leading up to midlife.

I could be here all day adding to this list, but by looking at these three points alone, I suggest.

You’re not anxious, you’re fucking angry and grieving at ALL the ways you’ve been gaslit.

How To Move Out of Anxiety

It’s time to start acknowledging and naming how you really feel instead of labelling your experiences as something they’re not.

If you’re angry, say you’re angry not ‘a bit cross’. Simmering with rage? Name your rage instead of letting it morph into resentment. Exhausted? Lay down instead of pushing on.

If you need to scream, voice it. Cry? Then open the mother fucking dam and let it OUT

When you allow yourself to experience and express what it is you’re actually feeling, you begin to remember why you’re feeling it and start to own it.

You remember all the times your boundaries have been trampled on or you’ve betrayed yourself to please someone else. When a blatant injustice has ripped your heart in two; you’ve been made to feel ‘less than’; or said yes to something you desperately needed to say no to.

There’s absolutely no shame in any of this, but if you want to move away from midlife anxiety and reconnect to your truth and power you must acknowledge the truth of your experience. Not let someone else tell you what it is.

The patriarchy has done a number on us. BUT we can reclaim ourselves by being with our feelings. Freeing them, hearing them, loving them and healing them into wholeness.
